NAHREP, the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals, was launched 20 years ago and has one goal: to advance sustainable Hispanic homeownership. As real estate practitioners, we knew that home ownership was a powerful thing, that it allowed for families to have a more stable environment, children of homeowners did better in school, and it was the number one way that families built wealth that they could pass on to the next generation. Over the years NAHREP built a tremendous network of passionate and successful individuals that share this mission and while we recognize that there is still more work to be done in the homeownership space, we wanted to take the organization to the next level. In 2014, NAHREP launched the Hispanic Wealth Project, a foundation that focuses on tripling Hispanic household wealth over ten years.
NAHREP realized that while Latinos were closing the income gap and earning more money than ever before, attaining college degrees at a higher rate than ever before, and participating in the workforce at a higher level than any other demographic, we were still not closing the wealth gap. Today, the median White family has a net worth that is 8 times more than the median Latino family. While this gap is closing, it is not closing fast enough. This led to the creation of the NAHREP 10 Disciplines, 10 principles designed to guide our community to build more wealth and prosperity, experience all that the American dream has to offer, and set our families up for long-lasting success.
At NAHREP and the Hispanic Wealth Project, we believe there is no reason why our community can’t be among the wealthiest in this country. But we need the information. We need tactics. We need guidance to create new disciplines, to advance this cause. Those disciplines are the NAHREP 10.
Many of these principles have to do with finances and money, topics that we are taught not to talk about at all, let alone with strangers. But we have to! We have to share our secrets, share our successes, and share our failures, so we can learn from each other.
